If you were to look toward nature — its physicality, condition, and natural phenomena —
and if you were to completely shift away from everything you know about it,
forgetting its physical, biological, and chemical properties, its reasoning,
functioning, and epistemological progression of understanding,
you might be able to discover and see in it something entirely new,
something fundamentally different.
Only by being open to the possibility of an unfamiliar perception
can I perceive something beyond rational knowledge,
and thus, through any form , art or architecture,
seek for visionary.
BIOGRAPHY
Jurgis Gečys ( b. 1987 Lithuania) is an architect and visual artist based in Vienna. He is a Senior Scientist at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Institute of Art and Architecture, and a graduate of the Academy. His architectural master thesis, “Curonian Spit, the Identity of the Landscape,” which focused on land art interventions and cultural heritage, was recognized as the best international student project at the IS Arch Awards 2015 and the AZ Awards Canada 2016.
Since 2014, Jurgis has worked as a freelance architect, contributing to notable projects such as the Ho Fine Arts Library at Cornell University, the Expo Cultural Park Greenhouse Garden in Shanghai, and Paracelsus Bad in Salzburg. In 2018 his academic achievements led him to further studies at the Friedl Kubelka School of Artistic Photography in Vienna. Awarded scholarships by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and the Federal Chancellery of Austria, his work has been showcased internationally, including in well-established Austrian venues such as Tressor Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien, Fotogalerie Wien, Vienna Parallel 2018, Camera Austria, Foto Wien 2019, Galerie Martin Suppan, and Bildraum 01 Wien.
As a visual artist, Jurgis focuses on intricate large-scale drawings, approaching them with meticulous reflection and exploring abstract and experimental forms. His work delves into how humans perceive and interact with landscapes by stripping away preconceptions to engage with raw, unmediated surroundings. Through his extensive spatial drawings, sculptures, and video installations, he fosters a deeper understanding of the origin of space, visual patterns, and rhythms, exposing the distinctive sensory experiences of desolate environments
