The Traces of Gesture
Photographic Series and Installation, 2018
Jurgis Gečys
The Traces of Gesture examines two conditions of bodily perception: the body sensed from within and the body in relation to its surroundings.
The first hypothesis draws on proprioception, the body’s capacity to sense its own position and movement. It considers this internal awareness as an aesthetic sense through which beauty, grace, balance and disruption may be experienced independently of sight. In the photographs, a continuous line passes through the body, aligning with or departing from its gesture and making this internal sense of bodily harmony and displacement perceptible.
The installation non-body-non-space extends this inquiry into the environment. A white mass forms a hypothetical albino landscape in which familiar qualities of landscape perception such as colour, texture, material and orientation are reduced to near disappearance. It proposes a radical condition in which the spatial and sensory cues through which the body locates itself, adapts and responds to its surroundings begin to dissolve, shifting toward a state of non-body and non-space. A hypothetical state in which the familiar references that define the body’s relation to space begin to lose their conventional distinction.
